What are Earth Rugs™?

Earth Rugs™ are made from 100% organic, natural jute fiber. Jute fiber is harvested from the bamboo-like Jute plant. Earth Rugs™ are products of the weavers art practiced for centuries by the native craftspeople of Bangladesh and India. Our rich colors and authentic designs are rooted in American tradition. Jute Rugs date back to the very beginning of rug weaving. Jute Rugs were used extensively in the 17th through the 19th centuries throughout the old British Empire. Earth Rugs™ are eco-friendly and jute is naturally biodegradable!

What is Jute?

Jute is a reed, like bamboo, that grows best in fertile delta soil. The jute plant is harvested then split open to expose the inner fibers. The inner fibers of the jute stalk are very soft and after retting, cleaning and combing they are spun into yarn.

Once upon a time, jute fiber was a relatively unknown material. It was only grown in certain parts of the world, and its uses were limited. However, all of that began to change in the 19th century.

Jute fiber was first discovered in the Indian subcontinent, where it had been grown for centuries. It was used primarily for making ropes and twine, but it had a number of other applications as well. However, it was relatively unknown outside of India.

That all changed in the mid 19th century. The Industrial Revolution was in full swing, and demand for raw materials was increasing rapidly. Jute fiber was discovered to be an ideal material for a number of industrial applications, including the manufacture of burlap sacks for transporting goods.

As demand for jute fiber increased, so too did the demand for land to grown it on. This led to the expansion of jute cultivation into new areas, including what is now Bangladesh. By the early 20th century, jute had become a major industry, with millions of people employed in its cultivation and processing.

Jute fiber continued to be an important material throughout the 20th century, although its importance began to wane as other materials became more widely available. However, it remains an important material in many parts of the world, and its history is a fascinating reminder of the ways in which human ingenuity can turn a relatively obscure material into a vital component of modern industry.

Jute is both a sustainable resource & biodegradable.

Are Earth Rugs™ durable?

Jute is one of the strongest fibers known to man! It was used on seagoing ships before the invention of steel cables. Woven into rugs, jute fibers provide lasting beauty and strength. They withstand commercial use and can last a lifetime in the home.  Reverse rugs and table accents for durability and versatility.

What if Earth Rugs™ get wet?

Jute has natural water repellent characteristics. Remember, it is a reed that naturally grows in water. Water cannot damage a rug woven from jute fiber.

How are Earth Rugs™ cleaned?

Step 1: Blot the Spot
Immediately upon spilling or spotting a stain, grab a dry cloth (a kitchen towel or any other kind of towel will do) and gently blot at the spot, get up as much of the liquid as you can. Do NOT rub; rubbing will push the liquid further into the braided jute fibers and may make it worse.  Blot until the spot is completely (or almost completely) absorbed.

Step 2: Clean the Spot
Do not use traditional spot removers on braided jute tabletop—they may be too harsh.  Instead, use a diluted 50/50 solution of warm water and gentle laundry detergent (without bleach like liquid Woolite) or dish soap. Dip a clean cloth into the solution, and blot at the spot again, gently rubbing but do not scrub. Dab at the area with a cloth and clean, warm water to remove soap. Repeat as needed for stubborn spots.

OR

If you’ve spilled something acidic like red wine or tomato sauce on your braided  jute tabetop use club soda instead of a soap solution, and follow the same Clean the Spot procedure above.

Step 3: Dry the Spot
Water can also cause stains on braided jute tabletop, so once it’s clean, dry the braided jute tabletop item with a blow dryer, or place a portable fan near the site of the spill to help your braided  jute tabletop item dry quickly and without damage.

To clean a liquid mess off of a braided jute tabletop item, follow the same instructions as above, but use a 50/50 mixture of white wine vinegar and water after you’ve gotten the liquid up with a dry cloth. Alternate between dabbing with the white wine vinegar mixture and a clean, dry towel until the stain is reduced. If an odor remains, sprinkle a bit of baking soda on top and leave overnight to neutralize. Use a blow dryer or fan to dry the spot.

To clean a solid or semi-solid mess off of a braided jute tabletop item, remove the solids from the tabletop item, spot clean it using the same instructions above. For solids that have dried onto the braided jute tabletop item, use a dull butter knife or spoon to remove as much of the solid material as possible, and then mini-vacuum excess debris.  If you do not have a mini-vac, use a whisk broom or a crumb sweep.   If a spot remains, treat it using the same Spot Cleaning method above.
